Free trade can only exist when businesses can actually access their markets. Being a promoter of open trade, the European Union (EU) wants to ensure that access to markets is facilitated for all. In this respect, Malta Enterprise is providing its clients with appropriate EU web links to help facilitate necessary research and provide further support.
Enterprise and Industry
The EU is making its utmost to reducing any administrative burden that SMEs might encounter in their business and trade, opening up business opportunities, stimulating innovation, encouraging sustainable production, and overall ensuring the smooth functioning of the EU's internal market to create a better and friendlier environment for businesses. This aids a healthy economic environment and contributes further towards job creation. Such initiatives are crucial to help set Europe on the right track to becoming a more competitive, innovative and resource-efficient economy, ready to tackle today's and tomorrow's challenges.

Market Access Database
The Database is an important operational tool of the EU's Market Access Strategy, supporting a continuous three-way exchange of information between the EU institutions, Member States and European business. The Strategy is a key pillar of the EU's Trade Policy which aims to reduce the obstacles faced by European exporters of goods and services. The Database is a free, interactive, easy to use service providing:
• Information about Market Access conditions in non-EU countries.
• A systematic way for the European Commission to follow up complaints from businesses about barriers to trade in non-EU countries.
• A means of ensuring that our trading partners are abiding by their international commitments.
• Better input for defining the EU's trade policy objectives on further trade liberalisation in the framework of the World Trade Organisation (e.g. Doha Development Agenda) and new free trade agreements between the EU and preferential partners (e.g. EU - MERCOSUR).

Export Helpdesk
This is a free online service providing information on how to access the EU market. The European Union is the world's largest single market and by far the most important trading partner especially for developing countries. The wide range of preferential trade agreements that the EU is offering partners in the developing world, allows them to benefit from a degree of openness unmatched by any other major economy and demonstrates the EU's commitment to putting trade at the service of development not only in theory, but also in practice.
